Our Accessibility Commitment
At NumbrWiz, we believe that online calculators should be accessible to everyone. Our team is dedicated to continually improving the user experience by applying relevant accessibility standards and inclusive design principles. We aim to conform with WCAG 2.1 Level AA success criteria as our guiding benchmark, while acknowledging that accessibility is an ongoing journey, not a one-time checklist.
This commitment extends across all NumbrWiz calculator pages, informational content, navigation systems, and interactive features. We integrate accessibility considerations into every stage of development — from initial design through to deployment and ongoing maintenance.
Inclusive Design Principles
Our design philosophy is rooted in the following core principles that guide every calculator and page we build:
- Perceivable: All content and interface components are presented in ways that users can perceive, regardless of sensory ability.
- Operable: All interactive elements are operable through multiple input methods — keyboard, mouse, touch, and assistive technologies.
- Understandable: Content is clear, predictable, and easy to read. Error messages are helpful, and navigation is consistent.
- Robust: Our code follows semantic HTML standards and modern web practices to maximize compatibility with current and future assistive technologies.
- Flexible: Layouts adapt gracefully to different viewport sizes, zoom levels, and user preferences such as dark mode and reduced motion.
Keyboard Navigation Support
All NumbrWiz calculators and interactive features are fully operable via keyboard alone. We have implemented consistent keyboard navigation patterns across the entire platform. No functionality requires a mouse or touch input exclusively.
Available Keyboard Shortcuts
Global Shortcuts
All focusable elements receive a clearly visible focus ring (using :focus-visible) styled with sufficient contrast against any background. We use a 2px solid outline with an additional offset to ensure focus states are never obscured.
Screen Reader Compatibility
NumbrWiz uses semantic HTML5 throughout — proper heading hierarchies, landmark regions, labeled form controls, and descriptive link text — to ensure screen reader users can navigate and understand our content efficiently. Key features include:
- ARIA labels: All interactive components carry appropriate
aria-label,aria-expanded,aria-current, androleattributes where needed. - Live regions: Dynamic result areas announce changes to screen reader users via ARIA live region attributes.
- Skip link: A "Skip to main content" link is the first focusable element on every page.
- Descriptive alt text: All SVG icons include
aria-hidden="true"when decorative, and meaningful text alternatives when informative. - Form labeling: Every input field has an associated
<label>element with a matchingforattribute.
Tested Assistive Technologies
We test with NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), and TalkBack (Android) to ensure broad compatibility across screen reader platforms.
Color Contrast and Readability
All text elements on NumbrWiz meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio requirements of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. Our color palette is carefully selected to ensure readability in both light and dark modes.
- Light mode: Dark text (#13223a) on light backgrounds (#f8fafc / #ffffff) with a contrast ratio exceeding 10:1.
- Dark mode: Light text (#f1f5f9) on dark backgrounds (#0b1526 / #13223a) with a contrast ratio exceeding 9:1.
- Interactive elements: Buttons and links maintain clear visual distinction from surrounding text through color, weight, and underlines on hover.
- Focus indicators: A high-contrast blue (#0a4f94) outline is used for all focus-visible states, never relying on color alone.
Readability Features
We use a clean system font stack with generous line-height (1.6), comfortable letter-spacing, and appropriately sized body text (16px base). Content is organized with clear headings, short paragraphs, and ample white space to reduce cognitive load.
Responsive and Mobile Accessibility
Every NumbrWiz calculator is built with a mobile-first responsive design approach. Pages adapt fluidly across viewports from 320px to 1920px and beyond, ensuring usability on smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers alike.
- Touch targets: All interactive elements maintain a minimum touch target size of 44x44px as recommended by WCAG 2.1 (Success Criterion 2.5.5).
- Zoom support: Content reflows correctly at up to 400% browser zoom without horizontal scrolling or content loss.
- Orientation independence: All pages work in both portrait and landscape orientations without functionality loss.
- Gesture compatibility: Touch gestures work alongside standard keyboard and pointer interactions without conflict.
Focus States and Navigation
Clear focus management is essential for keyboard and assistive technology users. NumbrWiz maintains a logical tab order that follows the visual layout of each page. Key aspects of our focus implementation include:
- Visible focus rings: Every interactive element displays a prominent outline when focused via keyboard, styled with
:focus-visible. - Focus trapping: Modal dialogs (such as the search overlay) trap focus within the modal until dismissed.
- Focus restoration: When modals close, focus returns to the element that triggered them.
- Skip navigation: A hidden "Skip to main content" link appears on first tab press, allowing users to bypass repetitive header navigation.
- Consistent navigation: The header, breadcrumb, and footer follow identical patterns across all pages for predictability.
Accessible Forms and Inputs
Calculator inputs on NumbrWiz are designed for maximum accessibility. Every form element follows established patterns that assistive technologies can reliably interpret:
- All
<input>and<select>elements have associated<label>tags with matchingforandidattributes. - Error states communicate problems through both color and text — never relying on color alone.
- Required fields are explicitly marked and announced to screen readers.
- Input placeholders are used only for supplementary hints, never as replacements for proper labels.
- Buttons include clear, action-oriented text that describes what will happen when activated.
Motion and Animation Preferences
NumbrWiz respects the prefers-reduced-motion CSS media query. When a user has enabled reduced motion in their operating system or browser settings, all animated transitions, hover effects, and result fade-ins are automatically disabled. The site remains fully functional with instant, non-animated state changes.
Reduced Motion
When prefers-reduced-motion: reduce is detected, all CSS transitions and animations are set to 0.01ms duration — effectively instant — while preserving all functionality. This accommodates users with vestibular disorders and motion sensitivity.
Semantic HTML Standards
We use semantic HTML5 elements throughout the NumbrWiz codebase to provide a meaningful document structure that assistive technologies can parse reliably:
- Landmarks:
<header>,<main>,<footer>,<nav>, and<section>elements with appropriatearia-labelledbyreferences define clear page regions. - Headings: A single
<h1>per page, followed by a logical<h2>through<h4>hierarchy that never skips levels. - Lists: Navigation links and grouped content use proper
<ul>/<ol>structures rather than styled spans. - Tables: Where tabular data appears, it uses proper
<table>markup with<thead>,<tbody>, andscopeattributes.
Assistive Technology Compatibility
NumbrWiz is tested for compatibility with a range of assistive technologies to ensure broad accessibility:
- Screen readers: NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows), VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), TalkBack (Android)
- Browser zoom: Tested at 200% and 400% zoom across Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge
- Speech recognition: Compatible with Dragon NaturallySpeaking and built-in OS voice control
- Alternative input devices: Switch devices, head pointers, and eye-tracking systems that emulate keyboard input
- High contrast mode: Our dark mode toggle provides an additional high-contrast viewing option
Ongoing Accessibility Improvements
Accessibility is not a static achievement — it requires continuous attention and iteration. Our ongoing process includes:
- Regular audits: We conduct accessibility reviews of all new calculators before publication and periodically re-audit existing tools.
- User feedback integration: Accessibility-related feedback is prioritized in our development roadmap.
- Team training: All contributors to NumbrWiz receive guidance on accessible coding practices and inclusive design.
- Standards monitoring: We track updates to WCAG guidelines and browser accessibility APIs to stay current.
- Automated testing: Lighthouse accessibility audits and axe-core checks are integrated into our quality assurance workflow.
Known Limitations
While we strive for comprehensive accessibility, we want to be transparent about areas where we are actively working to improve:
Areas Under Active Improvement
- Legacy calculator pages: Some older calculator tools published before our current accessibility standards may not yet have full ARIA annotations. We are systematically updating these.
- Third-party advertisements: Ad placements on NumbrWiz are served by third-party networks. While we use accessible container styling, the ad content itself may not always meet the same accessibility standards. We encourage ad partners to provide accessible creative assets.
- Complex visual outputs: Certain calculators with chart or graph outputs are being enhanced with text-based data alternatives and longer descriptions.
Third-Party Content Disclaimer
NumbrWiz may include embedded content or links to third-party websites and services, including advertisements. While we make every effort to ensure our own content is accessible, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of third-party materials. We encourage users to contact us if they encounter accessibility barriers related to external content on our site, and we will investigate and work toward a resolution where possible.
